Uncharted Territories
That first year of marriage
felt like stepping into uncharted territory—
every kiss a fresh map,
every sigh a new coastline.
We unfolded one another
in soft cotton and linen,
the headboard clacking against the wall
like a restless metronome.
By midweek, I’d trace his spine
in the dim glow of a bedside lamp,
marvelling that this Adonis
was mine at the flick of a hand.
Sundays became our holy ground:
dawn drifting into noon,
punctuated only by the rustle of sheets
as one of us slipped out
for a ham-and-cheese sandwich
and a pot of builder’s brew.
At seven, we’d haul ourselves upright,
shed last night’s warmth in the shower,
then wander to the SKC service cinema—
dark rows of seats, flickering reels,
the scent of popcorn mingling
with damp Army-issue raincoats.
